Day 1: Quito - Valle de Tandayapa
Early in the morning, your guide and transportation will pick you up from your hotel to head for the northwestern Andean region. The road that connects the Ecuadorian capital to the Pacific coast, crosses different altitudinal gradients and very well preserved Chocoan ecosystems. By descending through these different forests, we can better understand the importance of Andean topography and its multiple effects on high regional biodiversity. After 1h30 we will reach the confluence of the Alambi and Tandayapa river valleys, where we will have a first stop. Here one of the oldest hummingbird gardens of the region was constituted. Several dozens of species have been recorded in this small garden, where flower arrangements and drinking troughs are the most attractive for both observation and photography. We will have lunch with the instigator of the project who will tell us a little about his experience. In the afternoon we will undertake our ascent along the valley of Tandayapa until the cloud forests of the reserve of Bellavista. The largest proportion of this private conservation zone, anchored in the Andean foothills, consists of a large cloud forest inhabited by surprising and photogenic flora and fauna: tree ferns, reptiles, nocturnal mammals, heliconias, amphibians and a multitude of birds. After dinner, we will sit quietly in front of the observation area where, every night, curious and secretive nocturnal mammals such as Foxes, Cusumbos, Tayras and the newly described Olinguito de nieblina (Bassaricyon mist) come. Overnight at Bellavista Lodge - link)
Included: Lunch and dinner. Specialized guide. Transport. Entrance to the reserve.
Day 2: Bellavista Cloud forest Reserve
Before breakfast, we will have the opportunity to begin to discover the avifauna of these atypical forests. Around the huts, early in the morning a multitude of insectivorous birds congregate to feed on the exhausted insects of so much revolted in the lights of the Lodge. We will spend the rest of the day exploring the different trails, crests and ravines of the reserve. We will try to understand the importance of the conservation of these moist montane forests, interpreting the ecological system of this complex ecosystem of the high Chocó.
We will have the opportunity to observe and photograph a large number of birds such as Toucanes, Tangaras, Tyranos and Trogones. Being a higher altitudinal floor, we will be able to observe near 15 different species of hummingbirds and to perfect our photography techniques around the waterers. The rest of the day will be dedicated to explore the different trails of the reserve or simply to rest on the different terraces of the Lodge. At dark we can go back out in search of insects, amphibians, birds, reptiles and mammals. Night at the Lodge of Bellavista.
Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Specialized guide. Transport. Entry to the reserve.
Day 3: Paz de las Aves
Today we will have a very early breakfast, to continue our trip to the reserve Paz de las Aves. Here, from 6 in the morning, you can enjoy an unforgettable natural spectacle. In the bridal arenas, called "Lek", the males of the Cock of the Rock (Rupicola peruviana), enter a frantic competition to attract the females with their songs and dances, strategically placed in the growing light of the sun , to show off their bloody plumage. Angel and Rodrigo, the owners of the reserve, are passionate about birdlife and accompany us to show us a myriad of rare understory species that are difficult to observe normally. such as the Antpitta and the Woodquail. During the delicious typical brunch, served on the terrace facing the reserve, we will take a moment to share the experience of the family in this project of conservation and local development. In the afternoon we will return to the main road to return calmly to the city of Quito. Depending on the weather and schedules, we can stop in the xerophytic vegetation zones of the inter-Andean valley or in the upper part of Pululahua, the third largest inhabited volcanic crater in the world.
Included: Breakfast and lunch. Specialized guide. Transport.

Tailor made trip inspired on this tour."Juan did an excellent job. Also it was useful to have local guides with us at some locations. The whole trip was overall well prepared and we saw more birds than we expected to see. Juan also concentrated on target birds which was good. The handling of the trip by Dana was very professional." Julia and Christoph Moning on a… View the comment
